#1: They’re estrogen dominant.

Your hormones really can make your body hold on to fat! If you’re estrogen dominant, you could spend hours at the gym working out and not see any results in the mirror. You could be estrogen dominant due to birth control, or your body could be naturally producing an excess of estrogen. Luckily, there are ways to help overcome estrogen dominance. (Read more here!)

#2: They don’t sleep enough.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body produces a lot of a hormone called cortisol, which makes your body hold onto fat, especially in your belly. Your blood sugar levels will also be elevated, which causes the fat cells in your body to store more fat. Lack of sleep can also cause your thyroid hormone levels to be out of whack, too. All of this leads to fat that just won’t come off, even if you work out and eat healthy foods.

#3: They don’t eat enough.

For years we’ve heard that calorie restriction and cardio will lead to weight loss. To some extent, that’s true. For the first month or two, you’ll lose weight. But, that weight loss comes from losing fat AND losing muscle. If you’re looking to get a lean, toned body, calorie restriction won’t get you there! You need to make sure you’re eating enough calories, and eating the right kinds of foods at the right time to really turn your body into a fat-burning furnace. That’s exactly what I teach in the FASTer Way to Fat Loss!

Subject: Tips for Better Sleep

Hi there!

Recently I was asked by some of my clients to do a quick video on improving sleep. I can honestly say this is something I have personally been working on for years. In high school I suffered from insomnia and had high blood pressure due to chronic stress. In college I had a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep. In fact, I have only just recently been able to figure out my own sleep issues, and know the struggle of sleepless nights well. 

If you are struggling with either falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, here are a few tips to improving your sleep cycle. 

Change Your Sleep Mindset
Recently I realized that I had been telling myself a certain story about my ability to sleep well. I had resigned to being a bad sleeper and would tell myself over and over that sleep was just going to be an issue for me. I wasn't good at it and just couldn't do it well. I realized that this story was part of the problem and that I needed to rewrite it. So, I began to reframe the story a bit, and that has played a huge role in making peace with sleep. 

Set Up A Good Evening Routine
Your body will respond to environmental triggers and begin to shift down closer to bedtime, if you implement the same routine every night. I personally start my routine around 8pm. I shut off all overhead lights, put on my blue light blocking glasses, turn on my salt lamp and turn down the air conditioner. All of these things have now become signals to my body that it is time for bed, and have drastically improved my ability to sleep. 

Use Magnesium Oil
Most of us are magnesium deficient, which is actually a pretty big issue when it comes to healthy sleep cycles. Because of that, I use a magnesium spray every night. This helps with better sleep and improves skin, joint pain and overall energy levels. I use this particular brand of magnesium spray, but there are several other brands out there, so check them out and give one a try. 

Calm ZZZ
A client of mine recently introduced me to Calm ZZZ, an all-natural supplement, that has been a helpful piece of my sleep puzzle. This is particularly helpful for busy women like me, who often wake up in the middle of the night and then struggle to fall back asleep. Our minds are racing and we can't quite seem to quiet it all down. This stuff is fantastic at helping to quiet the noise and help you get back to sleep. 

Progesterone Cream
I recently went off an estrogen-dominant birth control due to some significant headaches I couldn't quite shake. Because I was on this type of pill I became estrogen dominant, which contributed to my sleep struggles. I was already not producing much progesterone and then the birth control added even more estrogen into my system, contributing to my headaches and lack of sleep. Progesterone cream and some other supplements have been helping me to get my estrogen levels back in check, while improving my sleep cycle.  

Cut The Blue Light
I realize this is easier said than done, but I do my best to go screen free around 8pm each night, so my brain settles down prior to bedtime!

Diet
Diet is truly the foundation of your body's ability to function optimally. Eat whole foods and stop eating a couple of hours before bed. This will give your body the essential nutrients it needs and help you to sleep because your body won't be working so hard to digest its food!

Relax
One night of bad sleep is not going to ruin your entire week. As moms, women, and business owners, things are going to happen. Your child is going to wake up in the middle of the night. You are going to have a bad day business-wise. Your puppy is going to need to be taken out (I speak from experience).  It's okay. Things happen. Don't let one bad night put you back on that negative sleep story loop. Get back to your routine the following day and move on. Dwelling on that one bad night is going to contribute to your sleeplessness and continue the cycle. 

With something like sleep, it is important you consult a physician or naturopathic doctor prior to implementing some of these strategies. However, this combination has been highly effective for me. As women, it can be difficult to turn off our brain when bedtime hits. Utilizing some of these strategies will go a long way to improving your ability to shut down and catch some ZZZs!

Subject: Finding Freedom Through the FASTer Way

Let's talk about freedom my friend!

The FASTer Way to Fat Loss has helped countless women get lean and fit...but it's also helped them find freedom.

While I've never personally struggled with an eating disorder, being in the fitness industry has certainly tainted my view of diet and exercise. For years, those of us in the industry were told that it's all about small meals, scattered throughout the day, insane-hour-long workouts, 5-6 days a week and regular weigh-ins to keep people motivated and on track.  We not only learned that this was the best approach to getting in shape, but we preached these methods to our clients. 

Today, we know better, but it's still a fight to break past traditionally accepted methods of losing weight and staying fit. However, my clients and I have found freedom through the FASTer Way process and that freedom is priceless.

Here's how it's helped:

Food freedom.
I define food freedom as feeling in control of the food you eat instead of food controlling you. Indulging when it's worth it, passing when it isn't, and never feeling guilt or shame regarding your food choices. 

  • Food freedom is feeling like I can maintain this lifestyle for the rest of my life.

  • Food freedom is feeling like food can be fun again. 

  • Food freedom is not having to worry about mini-meals shoved into containers every. single. day.

  • Food freedom is not stressing about what to eat and when to eat on my busiest days. 

  • Food freedom is having no guilt or shame over my favorite indulgences or treats with my family.

  • Food freedom is not having to worry about eating as soon as I get up and then again every two hours thereafter. 

  • Food freedom is not feeling enslaved to calorie counting.

The FASTer Way to Fat Loss has given me the freedom to eat a whole foods based diet, full of the nutrients I need to feel full of energy every day, but it doesn't consume me. It doesn't overwhelm me. It doesn't stress me out. I don't have to eat first thing in the morning. I don't have to plan ahead with a hundred little containers stuffed full of food every day. I can just live and enjoy my food!

Freedom from weigh-ins.
For years, I was told to do regular weigh-ins and I preached that to my clients as well. Some trainers did daily weigh-ins and no one did them less than weekly. The Biggest Loser and Weight Watchers are based around weigh-ins. Weigh-ins were the standard in the industry for YEARS. However, the FASTer Way has given me total freedom from having to weigh in. In fact, if I could, I would make everyone all across America throw out their scales. The scale truly can not measure your health, wellness or confidence. How you feel, how you look, and how much space you take up in your pants are far better indicators of overall well being than a number on the scale. I no longer weigh myself and don't allow my clients to step on a scale at all. The FASTer Way has given me freedom to ditch the scale and start focusing on my non-scale victories instead.

Freedom to feel proud of yourself. 
The FASTer Way to Fat Loss has given me the freedom to be confident in how I look and the progress I've made. If you are seeing progress toward your goals, there is nothing wrong with being proud of that progress! My clients are learning to celebrate that progress and the small wins on their journey toward the healthiest, strongest versions of themselves. 

Freedom to rest and permission to scale back from workouts. 
After years of grinding in the gym for hour-long-insane workouts, 5-6 days a week, the FASTer Way has finally given me the freedom to rest and scale back on my workouts. In fact, I've learned that it is absolutely imperative to take time to rest and listen to our bodies. The type of workouts we've been told to do are actually what cause the symptoms of hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue and burnout. 

Through the FASTer Way, my clients and I have learned to work out smarter. We pair our food cycle with the workouts that will give us the most bang for our buck. We eat enough to fuel our more challenging workouts. I only ask FASTer Way clients to really grind in the gym 2 days per week. 

I've gained total freedom to step into the gym, realize I'm not feeling it, and scale back or just go home. I tell clients to do the same; if they haven't slept well, have had a particularly stressful day or are feeling under the weather, then they too have the freedom to call it a day and get some rest. 

The FASTer Way will get you lean, fit and strong, but more importantly, it will give you the same kind of freedom that both my clients and I have found over the last year and a half.
