Instagram has changed tremendously over the past 12 to 18 months. Instagram used to be a collection of very in-the-moment photos. Now it’s more curated and many accounts are filled with photos that look like they’ve been taken professionally. There’s also a lot of “white noise” on Instagram with advertising and people selling products and services all the time.

The trick is to stand out from the crowd with smart, authentic marketing on Instagram. If you’re in an MLM, simply posting photos of the products you sell doesn’t work. If you’re selling a program, just posting generic information about your program doesn’t work.

You need to make yourself stand out from the crowd. With every post, ask yourself, “Does this post provide value to my followers?” Remember, your goal is to get your followers to know, like and trust you so they’ll invest in your business. The best way to do that is to provide value on your social media platforms. Give tips, provide inspiration, whatever it is that will help solve a problem or a pain point for your followers.

You should post a minimum of once every daily; ideally you’ll want to post 2-3 times a day. The best time of day to post can vary with your niche market. For example, if your niche is working moms, you may not want to post at 10 am when they’re at work. I find that sometime around 7 am EST and 8 pm EST work well for my niche market. Experiment with the timing of your posts to find when you get the best engagement.

To grow your Instagram, you’ll need to authentically connect with other Instagram users. I built my Instagram following using what I call my 20/20/20 Strategy. I leave genuine comments (VERY IMPORTANT) on 20 posts, like 20 posts, and follow 20 people who are in my niche market every day. It’s not enough to leave comments like “Great!” or “Awesome!” Make sure that your comments specifically talk about what’s in that photo and the photo’s description. Otherwise, you’ll risk sounding spammy. The 20/20/20 strategy does take a bit of time, but I promise you, it works!

Instagram Stories are a new way to interact with your followers. It’s a great way to share about your life so your followers really get to know you. You’ll be able to build relationships with your followers by letting them see a little piece of your life. If you’re in an MLM, you can use Instagram stories to show your followers how you use your products every day. Showing off features and benefits can really help you sell.

Each photo or video you post to your Instagram Story will only be visible for 24 hours. So, make sure that you’re adding genuine, valuable content to your Instagram Story consistently for your followers.
